Diano d'Alba Superiore DOCG

Tasting: Color, aroma and taste are an evolution of the classic Dolcetto. The typical scent of red fruits, such as black cherry and cherry, is amplified thanks to the aging. The final result is an unusual wine, for meditation, which brings back all the characteristics of the dolcetto and a few more notes.

  The Vineyard

This vineyard is very important for our company. The previous owner’s name was Pietro and, as far as we know, he had always grown Dolcetto on this slope that goes gently down towards the Talloria valley. The vineyard is formed by long straight rows divided into 4 segments – called  “turne”, in Piedmontese – all exposed towards Monviso, which is W-S-W. We are therefore on the sloping side of the descending side of hill, between Diano d’Alba and Montelupo Albese. The interaction between the grape variety, microclimate and soil is very important for the perfect ripening of the Dolcetto bunches. Despite being halfway up the hill (325m), the place has good ventilation, making it dry during the summer. The subsoil is made of Marne di Sant’Agata Fossili with sands (10-11 million years old) that gradually tends towards the Cassinasco Formation (formerly the Lequio Formation), it is “mineral” and poor in organic substance, an optimal condition for our favorite grape. Only Diano d’Alba and a few other Langhe territories (such as Treiso and some areas of Dogliani) have terroirs in which the Dolcetto is particularly at ease growing grapes that could be defined as “superior”. If properly vinified, they can give life to medium-long aging wines such as our Diano d’Alba Superiore “Pietrìn”. To promote this type of wine is our mission, despite all the difficulties of the dolcetto-based denominations have had  in recent years. In this area the Dolcetto grape is able to fully express the terroir, even better than some of its more famous relatives. Taste to believe!
